A Major Step Forward for Public Safety in Texas

March 19 marked a truly historic day for public safety in Texas — one that Crime Stoppers of Houston has long worked toward. Our deepest thanks go to our Director of Victim Services and Advocacy, Andy Kahan, and every individual who remained steadfast in this mission. While more work lies ahead, today is a major step forward and one worth celebrating.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to all the elected officials who made the safety and well-being of every Texan a priority. The Glenda Gordy Research Center was proud to support this effort by providing data that contributed to the passing of the following impactful legislation:

Key Legislative Updates

  • SJR 5 will allow Texas voters to decide whether judges should have the discretion to deny bond to defendants charged with certain violent crimes. This measure passed by an overwhelming bipartisan vote.
  • SB 9 restricts magistrates from granting personal recognizance (PR) bonds to defendants charged with specific crimes, and eliminates bond eligibility for parolees charged with a felony. It also removes PR bond eligibility for those charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm. SB 9 also passed by a strong bipartisan majority.

These developments represent significant progress in strengthening community safety across Texas. Through collaborative data analysis, advocacy, and leadership, we are taking crucial steps to protect our neighborhoods and ensure a safer future for all.
